DESCRIPTION:In the early years of the 19th century, Liverpool had the unenviable reputation of being the European capital of the slave trade. The involvement of Liverpool in this despicable trade was not restricted to transporting enslaved people; the town was also heavily involved in the trade in goods cultivated by enslaved people. Many people in Liverpool were considerable benefactors of compensation paid upon the abolition of the slave trade. The dominaton of Liverpool in the 19th century cotton trade also brought involvement in the American Civil War. All of these facets will be explored in this talk.
