DESCRIPTION:This presentation will consist of three inter-locking parts. Firstly, it will consider Liverpool as a city port which received migrants from Ireland who shaped an English urban centre with a particularly Irish ethnic character. Secondly, it will explore Liverpool’s role as an emigrant departure point and as a crucial oceangoing hub in the evolution of the modern Irish Diaspora. Finally, it will conclude by discussing archival resources and in particular, demonstrating the relevant historical sources available on the Irish Emigration Database (www.Dippam.ac.uk).
